3 dead in 5-vehicle smash-up

  The stillness of the evening was jolted last night when a ten-wheeler truck plowed into a four-vehicle convoy killing three persons, two of them on the spot, in barangay Dao, this city.

The freak road accident took place along Dao highway near Kilometer 3.

The erring dump truck was on its way to this city when it rammed through the convoy.

Bearing the brunt of the five-vehicle collision was the two motorcyles, the second and third vehicles, of the slow-moving convoy. The lead vehicle, a Multicab was a total wreck but the driver identified as Alejo Darunday, age unknown, of barangay Dasitam, Baclayon escaped the mishap with only slight injuries. He was immediately discharged from the hospital after emergency treatment.

LOON'S newly-launched one-stop shop licensing system has drawn praise from local businessmen and store owners as it shrunk the days of processing for annual renewal or applications for business permits and licenses into hours.

This development is a far cry from previous years when processing time for tax documents would run from one to two days as taxpayers would have to go from one place to another to get signatures of authorities.

  CHIEF JUSTICE REYNATO HAS STIRRED THE hornet's nest with his circular advising courts nationwide to impose fines rather than jail terms on persons convicted of libel. For starters, it has stimulated debate right inside the Palace.

Chief Legal Counsel Sergio Apostol claims the circular is not lawful as it would effectively amend the libel law. Certainly there is nothing apostolic in that opinion given that it did not improve imprisonment as an alternative punishment.
